Sustainable Living Through Self Sufficiency

November 28, 2010

Living sustainably is an obligation we have to our children, our children’s children and our children’s, children’s childen… And further on down into what I hope will be a rosy future for humans and this wonderful planet. Sometimes it’s hard to see a rosy future. Mankind is hell-bent on economic growth in spite of the warning signs we see around us. Pursuing continuous economic growth inside a corrupt monetary system is trashing our planet. Consumerism has been blamed for much of the planet-trashing but the fact is consumerism is a symptom of continuous economic growth. Over time I hope to delve into the issue more deeply on this blog. But the main thrust – my main interest – is self-sufficiency. Why? Because it’s a contribution I can make. A contribution we could all make to sustainability.

Now, I’m not talking the back-breaking toil most of us would associate with self-sufficiency, slaving away to eke out an existence. I’m talking abundance; plenty to eat, plenty to share and enough money to be comfortable.

Money is an issue to most people, there’s just no escaping it. And as much as money – debt based money – disgusts me, I’ll be writing about it. Through this blog I intend to share ways to live comfortably for less – detailing the projects and systems I have in place. And that’s going to include stuff that I do to earn income online. It will be a strange blend of facts and how to’s – money and online marketing tips. But it’s a strange blend of money and sustainable living through self sufficiency that is on people’s minds…

We all want enough. Enough money. Enough food. Financial security. The trick is how to play the game and get that result without trashing the environment. The trick is picking a higher path and being the most that we can be while recognizing our interdependence with all of nature. Welcome to the self-sufficiency project! More to come.
